Some units (GPSMAP 620/640 & nüvi 5xx) can switch between car mode and marine mode and show a correct marine chart in the marine mode. The color palette will most likely be wrong anyway and it's not easy to correct with TYP-files. It might be sligtly better results with BlueChart g2 Vision in some of the Garmin car navigators. GMPC distorted example with VPC410S v10.50 Guessing that it would be problems with road navigators also.
The newer BlueChart g2 Vision v11.50 from 2010 are hard to use with GMXT & GMPC. There's also lack of details for spot soundings and other marine chart details (tide water etc.).

The other units like nüvi for car usage & StreetPilot plus software products GMXT and GMPC shows water areas in quite dark blue. Marine units and BlueChart compatible units shows marine charts with correct marine colors. If there's also a ":\Garmin\GarminDevice.xml" file there could be IMG files in paths like ":\.System\*.img" and ":\Map\*.img" depending on the GarminDevice.xml structure. The file name(s) might be something like "VPC410S.img" instead of the common "gmapsupp.img". HomePort detects maps from the path ":\Garmin\*.img". It's possible to view as many marine IMG files as you have room for on your memory card or USB stick. The nuvi 500 and 550 will not experience many of these limitations Please remember that many automotive devices are not waterproof and should be treated carefully when being used near water. There are certain elements of these mapping products that were designed for use on dedicated Marine GPS products that will not be displayed on a nuvi, zumo ,Colorado 62s,Dakota or StreetPilot or other outdoor device. Now i want to get my hands on the sonar recordings. I have made a few trips with the Echomap50S recording 4Gigs of sonar data. Previously I had access to a Lowrance HDS7 and with the exported sonar recordings i made mighty fine looking depth maps with a tool called Surfer from Golden Software from raw exported x,y,z coordinates.Īlong with the Echomap there was delivered 2 pieces of software Homeport and BaseCamp. I have recently purchased a Echomap50S to extend my fishing results and to map the lakes i fish.
